In this post we get to know Kelly Ann Duhigg from Girl With A Passport.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I was inspired by the death of my mom. See, we were supposed to go to Rome since it was her life long dream. But about a week before we were due to leave, she got a really bad cough that didn’t seem to go away. We had to cancel our trip after she found at the hospital that her cough was due to stage 4, ovarian cancer. She died about a year later, never having fulfilled her dream. I never wanted that to happen to anyone else and so I started my blog, to encourage people to follow their dreams, just like I did

How did you come to name your blog?

Well, since I am a solo female traveler, I wanted a name that reflected how awesome and powerful women are. So, I drew my inspiration from the book, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because she was about as badass as they come. I just changed the second part to Passport since my blog is about travel

What makes you unique compared to all other bloggers out there?

Haha! Me!! I am about as unique as they come and the voice of my blog reflects that. I also get into a ton of crazy situations and make a ton of silly mistakes, all of which I share with my followers since learning what not to do is just as important as learning about what to do.

What do you love most about being part of the FTB group?

The friendships and the sense of community. I have met so many amazing women through that group, some of whom are now my best friends! And for that I am forever grateful

What advice do you have for people wanting to start a blog or those who are struggling to continue with it?

Don’t give up! If this is what you want to do, stick with it because you will find a way to make it work. My areas of expertise are Pinterest and SEO, both of which are important when creating a steady flow of traffic to your site

What are your blogging goals?

I would like to continue to grow my blog and create a loyal fan base based on the unique qualities of my narratives.

What has been your biggest blogging win?

Being able to quit my job and travel full time. And it’s all because of the advice I got from FTB and the amazing bloggers I met there.

Where do you live?

Currently Vietnam but I am a digital nomad and location independent.

What do you do for your career?

Blogger but I also do SEO and Pinterest consulting.

What is your favorite film?

Tough one! Probably The Greatest Showmen. Such a good movie.

What song is your life anthem?

Never Give Up by Sia. I listen to that when I feel like giving up. And it always reminds me that you can do anything in life, as long as you never quit.

What quote sums up where you are right now?

“Life’s Uncertain, Eat Dessert First”

Do you have an embarrassing travel story?

OMG. I have so many! I am a walking travel disaster! One of my faves though was when I was flying back to NYC from Barcelona and I walked out of the airport about 30 minutes before my flight! I misread a sign and had to go back upstairs and RACE through security. Thank God it was the middle of the night and I was able to breeze through security and catch my flight

What has been your most memorable travel experience so far and what made it so unforgettable?

Probably staying at the Ice Hotel in Sweden. Not only was it amazing, but it was totally by chance. I met a fellow solo traveler on the train who invited me to spend the night with her. Such a great experience that I would never have had without her since I had tried to book a room there, but the hotel was totally full!

What is your favorite city and country and why?

Oh gosh. So tough. I think Edinburgh is definitely one of my fave city’s for sure. I love all the history and the charm and the beautiful landscape. But I also love Sweden and Thailand too!

What’s one destination did not impress you and why?

Ha! There have been a couple of those. I was not overly impressed by Malaysia and Singapore. I didn’t hate them but just have no desire to go back. I also wasn’t super into Germany. But, I only went to Berlin, was with a large group, and was there for 10 days so I would definitely go back and give it another chance!

What has been your favorite meal?

My favorite meal would have to be ricotta pierogies! So delicious!

Where are you traveling to next?

I will be in Vietnam for 3 months and then I’m off to Myanmar!

What/who inspired you to travel?

Definitely my mom. She always wanted me to follow my dreams and always encouraged me to do things alone. She always said, “If you wait around for other people, you’re gonna wait a really long time”. And she was right!

What’s your travel style and why do you like it? (Budget, Luxury, slow, sustainable, family, solo etc)

I am a slow solo traveler. I love the freedom of solo travel and the flexibility of slow travel since it gives you more time to see everything and is cheaper too!

Kelly is a quirky (quirky is an understatement but we’ll just go with it) New Yorker who started her solo female travel blog, Girl with the Passport, way back in ye olde January of 2017.

Having got tired of living for the weekend and hating everything about my full-time job as a nanny she decided that it was time for a change. And that’s how her bloody blog was born. It’s a place where she shares her passion for travel with others and inspires them to do what they love and make travel a priority since life is just too short to do anything else.

Fast forward almost three years later and Kelly has quit her nanny job and become a full-time travel blogger who does a bit of Pinterest and SEO consulting on the side. She has also moved out of New York and is currently living the proverbial, Millennial dream as a digital nomad.

As of right now, Kelly calls Southeast Asia home, but who knows where the future will take her! What she does know is that there are no plans to return to NYC and she’s SUPER excited about being a part of this amazing community of women.
